Maya Oakes

Registered Psychotherapist

Hello and Welcome! My name is Maya.

I created Branching Out Psychotherapy & Wellness with the understanding that it can be challenging to “branch out”... whether that means redefining your comfort zone, changing familiar behaviours, learning new things about yourself, or exploring your inner world more deeply. Change can feel daunting, and my role is to support and empower you as you navigate this process.

I offer both in-person (in Whitby) and virtual therapy to Millennial and Gen Z teens (16+) and adults navigating anxiety, stress, depression, relationship challenges, trauma, grief, life transitions, and self-esteem struggles.

I’d be honoured to support you and create a space where insight, compassion, and growth can unfold.

Approach

My approach to therapy is rooted in a psychodynamic and relational framework, grounded in the belief that many of us develop patterns over time that shape how we think, feel, and relate to others. Together, we will explore the meaningful experiences that have influenced who you are today — not to dwell in the past, but to better understand the patterns that may be keeping you stuck. With curiosity and compassion, we’ll begin to shift what no longer serves you and strengthen the parts of you that move toward peace, connection, and fulfillment.

Our work will be collaborative and paced in a way that feels safe and supportive. Therapy is not about fixing you — it’s about deepening self-understanding, building emotional regulation, and strengthening your confidence in yourself and your relationships. I take a holistic approach that considers both mind and body, helping you tune into your internal experiences without judgment.

Alongside this foundation, I integrate evidence-based practices including Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Somatic Therapies, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) to support insight, resilience, self-compassion, and meaningful change.

How We Can Support

We’re here to support you through life’s challenges, offering a space to slow down, make sense of your experience, and reconnect with yourself.
