Maya Oakes
Registered Psychotherapist
Hello and Welcome! My name is Maya.
I want to start off by acknowledging that starting therapy is not always the easiest choice; I'd like to recognize the courageous step you are taking to begin your journey of healing & growth. I created Branching Out Psychotherapy & Wellness with the understanding that it can be challenging to "branch out" whether that be redefining our comfort zone, changing familiar behaviours, learning new things about ourselves, or exploring our thoughts, feelings and relationships. Change can be daunting - my role is to support and empower you as you navigate this process.
I work with adolescents (12+) and adults who are facing challenges related to anxiety, stress, depression, relationship concerns, trauma, grief, life transitions, and self-esteem.
I would be honoured to be part of your therapy journey and I look forward to creating a safe space with you where you are offered the compassion and validation needed for processing, healing and growth.

Approach
My approach is grounded in the understanding that many of us find ourselves stuck in patterns that shape how we think, feel, and relate to others. In our space, we will identify these recurring patterns by exploring the significant pieces of your past that contribute to who you are today. Together, we will rearrange these pieces in ways that foster healing from distressing patterns, and encourage growth towards patterns that bring peace and fulfillment.
In emphasizing a psychodynamic and holistic framework, we will collaboratively explore the inner experiences of your mind and body from a stance of curiosity and without judgment. Working at a pace that feels safe, we'll work to establish goals, build resiliency and self-compassion, and identify effective coping strategies. To support this framework, I also draw upon other various approaches including Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Emotionally- Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Reduction Therapy.
